Iain Robertson, the former actor known for his role as Stevie O’Hara in the BBC soap *River City*, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for multiple offences, including rape and assault. The 45-year-old faced conviction for five crimes related to domestic abuse committed against several women over a span of 15 years, from 2004 to 2019. During the proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow, witnesses described Robertson as both “violent” and “controlling.”
Robertson appeared for sentencing via video link from Barlinnie prison, where Lady Drummond emphasized the profound and enduring harm his actions had inflicted on the victims. She highlighted that the women continue to suffer from anxiety, flashbacks, and a loss of trust and sense of safety due to his behaviour.
Among the offences was a rape between 2018 and 2019 involving a woman with whom Robertson had worked on *River City*. The woman recounted how their relationship, initially professional, became intimate before she attempted to revert it to a platonic status. One night at his Glasgow home, she planned to sleep on the sofa but was persuaded to join him in bed under the assertion that “nothing would happen.” Rather than respecting her boundaries, Robertson engaged in sexual activity against her wishes, with the victim stating she did not consent and did not participate willingly. The court also heard about an earlier unwanted sexual act by Robertson, which she described as something she merely waited to be over. Robertson was found guilty of a course of abusive behaviour against her.
Further evidence during the trial introduced incidents involving two other women. One woman accused Robertson of forcing himself on her in the Lake District in 2007, although jurors did not reach a verdict on the rape allegation. He was, however, convicted of assault for throwing wine over her head and damaging her university course work. Another female actor described how Robertson persistently harassed her with excessive calls, voicemails, and gifts sent to her theatre performances. He was found guilty of threatening and abusive behaviour towards her.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service commended the courage of the women who testified, acknowledging their vital role in ensuring justice. Procurator Fiscal Faye Cook remarked, “It is through their testimony that Robertson was brought to justice. Robertson held a high-profile position through his career but in private he assaulted and abused females who trusted him. This has caused lasting damage to the lives of people who thought they were safe around him.” Following his conviction, Robertson has been placed on the sex offenders’ register and will undergo supervision for three years after his release.
