In recent days, the back-up passenger vessel encountered “technical issues,” which has led to cancellations on the Heysham route, specifically on Sunday and Tuesday. This disruption has affected the usual schedule maintained by the ferry operator.
Originally, the Manxman was expected to resume service on Wednesday; however, the Steam Packet has yet to announce a new date for its return. The delay in setting a revised schedule leaves passengers uncertain about when the vessel will be operational again.
Brian Thomson, the managing director, acknowledged the inconvenience faced by travelers, describing the situation as “frustrating.” Nevertheless, he emphasized that prolonging the vessel’s stay in drydock was a necessary decision to ensure both safety and operational reliability. According to Thomson, this additional maintenance is crucial for the ferry’s future performance.
He further stated, “Completing these additional works now will ensure the vessel can continue to provide a reliable and dependable service in the years ahead.” The Steam Packet, owned by the government, operates daily routes connecting the island with Lancashire and Liverpool, as well as regular trips to Larne in Northern Ireland
