Approximately 300 hectares of the RSPB reserve at Loch Garten, Abernethy, have been affected by fire, with ongoing efforts to control the blaze. The RSPB highlighted the significant involvement of local communities, including gamekeepers and staff from nearby estates, working together to stop the fire from advancing.
Concerns have arisen regarding the capercaillie, a species of large woodland grouse recently observed near Ryvoan, as the fire poses a potential threat to their habitat. Meanwhile, large areas of Scotland continue to face a very high risk of wildfires through the weekend.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), in collaboration with the Scottish Wildfire Forum, has issued warnings covering the central Highlands as well as southern and eastern regions of Scotland. These alerts will remain in place until Monday, following several days of sustained hot and dry weather conditions across much of the country.
SFRS area Commander Lynne Gow emphasized the need for public caution during this period, stating, “We want people to enjoy the outdoors safely, but during periods of heightened wildfire risk we are asking everyone to act responsibly and avoid the use of naked flames. Wildfires can develop rapidly, spread unpredictably and have devastating consequences for communities, wildlife and the environment. By taking simple precautions, everyone can play a part in helping prevent further incidents.” In case of spotting a large outdoor fire, the public is urged to call 999 immediately, providing detailed location information to enable a swift response from emergency services
