Clacton by-election attracts 34 candidates

A total of 34 individuals have officially entered the Clacton constituency by-election, which was called following the resignation of Nigel Farage. Farage, leader of Reform UK, stepped down as MP on 7 July amidst heightened scrutiny concerning his financial affairs and an ongoing parliamentary inquiry. Despite resigning, he is contesting the seat once more.

Among the candidates, there are 20 independents alongside several humorous entrants, including three nominees representing the Monster Raving Loony party. Notably, no candidates from the major Westminster political parties are participating in this by-election. The polling date for voters is set for 13 August.

According to Tendring District Council, this event likely sets a new modern record for the number of candidates standing in a by-election. Previously, the highest number recorded was 26 during the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008. That election was triggered when Conservative MP Sir David Davis resigned his own seat and was similarly marked by the absence of mainstream party candidates.

The current by-election’s unusually large pool of contenders highlights both local interest and the unique political circumstances surrounding Nigel Farage’s resignation and subsequent candidacy. The election outcome on 13 August will determine who ultimately represents the Clacton constituency moving forward
