Record 128 people cross English Channel in one small boat

On Friday, a small vessel crossed the English Channel carrying 128 people, marking the highest number ever recorded on a single boat making this journey. That day saw a total of 225 migrants cross the Channel aboard three separate boats.

So far this year, over 12,000 individuals have arrived in the UK via small boats, representing a 44% decrease compared to the same period last year. A spokesperson from the Home Office commented on the situation, stating, “Smuggling gangs are taking greater risks than ever, with the number of people they are cramming into unseaworthy boats rising year on year.”

The previous record for the largest number of migrants on one vessel stood at 125. Regarding the recent crossing, the Home Office emphasized the dangers posed by these criminal gangs, saying, “This crossing serves as a stark reminder that criminal gangs have no regard for the safety of those they claim to help, the reality is clear and lives are being lost in the Channel as a result.”

To address this ongoing issue, the Home Office highlighted a recently signed agreement with France aimed at curbing these dangerous crossings. The deal focuses on increasing enforcement efforts on beaches, and it builds upon the prevention of more than 45,000 attempted crossings since the last election
