Ken Bates: Former Chelsea and Leeds owner dies at age of 94, Chelsea announce

Ken Bates, the former owner of both Chelsea and Leeds United football clubs, has passed away at the age of 94. Chelsea Football Club announced his death on Saturday, noting that he died peacefully in Monaco, surrounded by his wife and family.

Bates’ legacy at Chelsea began in 1982 when he purchased the club for a nominal fee of £1, taking on significant debts amounting to £1.5 million. At that time, Chelsea was competing in the old Second Division. Over the following years, Bates worked diligently to transform the club’s fortunes. In 2003, he sold Chelsea to Roman Abramovich for £140 million, by which point the club had established itself in the English top flight, despite facing considerable debt. Although he sold his shares, Bates remained as chairman at Stamford Bridge until stepping down in 2004.

During his tenure, Bates oversaw several key managerial appointments, including John Neal, John Hollins, Bobby Campbell, Ian Porterfield, David Webb, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli, and Claudio Ranieri. It was particularly under Ruud Gullit’s management that Chelsea broke a 26-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup in 1997. The club also enjoyed victories in the League Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, and a second FA Cup title before Abramovich’s acquisition. Chelsea paid tribute to Bates, highlighting his determination and dedication in difficult times that helped lead the club towards success.

Following an unsuccessful attempt to invest in Sheffield Wednesday, Bates acquired ownership of Leeds United in January 2005, retaining control until December 2012. Leeds experienced significant challenges during this period, including a loss in the Championship play-off final in 2006 and a relegation to the third tier of English football the following year after entering administration. Bates was part of the consortium that bought Leeds back from administration, guiding their return to the Championship by 2010. Even after selling the club towards the end of 2012, he stayed on as chairman and briefly served as honorary president before finally leaving the club in July 2013
