Detectives investigating a cocaine trafficking case in Derby were reportedly taken aback by an unexpected intervention from the American rapper 50 Cent. The well-known musician had written to a judge, requesting that a suspect be released on bail so he could participate in the rapper’s Legacy Tour. This unusual development came to light after Abdirahiim Hassan was sentenced to 18-and-a-half years in prison at Derby Crown Court for conspiracy to supply Class A cocaine and possession of criminal property, including cash, in a case concluding in March 2026.
There is no indication that 50 Cent was aware of Hassan’s criminal behavior. In a letter advocating for Hassan’s bail, the rapper offered to personally pay £50,000 to secure his release. Hassan, aged 37 and from Hammersmith and Fulham in London, was among ten men sentenced as a result of Operation Daybreak. Prosecutors described him as being heavily involved in national cocaine distribution. Throughout his trial, Hassan appeared to exhibit “staggering arrogance and comfortable dishonesty,” describing a lavish lifestyle connected to working with a high-profile musician.
Detective Green, speaking to the BBC, described the initial police reaction to the letter from 50 Cent as one of incredulity. “When you get something like that come in, it’s quite a unique moment and I think the team were a little bit shocked,” he said. “You obviously think it’s fake to start with… it’s obviously one of those things you’ll never forget as part of an investigation.” Later, photographs and videos were provided by Hassan’s defense showing him on private jets and attending US tour dates, lending credibility to the support from 50 Cent.
In addition to the bail request, 50 Cent submitted another letter to the court for Hassan’s sentencing hearing. The rapper wrote that he had known and worked with Hassan for many years, both professionally and personally. He acknowledged the gravity of the charges against Hassan but sought to present an honest account of his character based on firsthand experience. In his letter, 50 Cent stated that employment opportunities would be available to Hassan upon release, emphasizing his appreciation for Hassan’s reliability, experience, and work ethic
