Drink driver who killed young woman while speeding at 119mph jailed

A young man who was intoxicated while driving and lost control of his vehicle, resulting in the death of a teenage passenger, has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Kyle Patrick, aged 23, admitted to charges of causing death and serious injury through dangerous driving after consuming alcohol during a night out in Perth city centre in September 2024.

Erin Slane, who was just two days away from turning 20, tragically died at the crash scene. Another occupant, identified only as Jane, survived but sustained injuries. Testimony at the High Court in Edinburgh revealed that shortly before the crash, Erin sent messages to friends expressing fear for her safety, stating, “I may not survive tonight” and “Kyle is steaming.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, Patrick has been disqualified from driving for ten years. During the sentencing hearing held at the High Court in Glasgow, Lord Harrower condemned Patrick’s conduct as showing a “complete disregard over a sustained period of time,” highlighting the “prolonged and deliberate driving at excessive speed” combined with “excessive consumption of alcohol.” The judge acknowledged that no punishment could ease the pain endured by the victims and their families, emphasizing the “terrible devastation” caused by Patrick’s actions.

Further details revealed that Patrick, originally from Scone in Perthshire, spent the evening consuming alcohol at various pubs in Perth city centre and was drinking heavily. After visiting several establishments and consuming pints and shots, he began offering lifts to others at a taxi rank. At the time of the crash, he was only 21 years old. Driving a Ford Fiesta ST-3 turbo, Patrick collected passengers including Erin and her friend outside a local pub shortly after 1:45 a.m. Prosecutor Graeme Jessop KC described Patrick’s driving along the B9099 road between Luncarty and Stanley as excessively fast and reported that shortly before the fatal collision, Erin had sent multiple text messages expressing her distress. The vehicle lost control at high speed, crossed into oncoming traffic, left the road, breached a fence, descended a grassy embankment, and rolled several times before coming to rest upside down in a field
