World Cup 2026: England midfielder Jordan Henderson expected to have surgery on injured wrist

England midfielder Jordan Henderson is set to undergo surgery for a wrist injury sustained during the celebration of his team’s victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16. This development raises uncertainty about his ability to participate in the subsequent matches of the tournament.

The 36-year-old player appeared to injure himself when he fell awkwardly over the advertising hoardings at the Azteca Stadium, resulting in him being carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Following the incident, England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel described the injury as serious during a BBC One broadcast after their 3-2 win.

“Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel said. He added, “It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”

After the match in Mexico City on Monday, Henderson was taken to the hospital by a member of England’s support staff and did not make the journey back with the team to their base in Kansas City. Despite the injury, it is reported that the Brentford midfielder is eager to remain with the England squad for the rest of their time in the United States
