Keir Starmer intervened in row over Mexico-England kick-off time

The prime minister and foreign secretary played active roles in opposing a proposed change to the kick-off time for England’s World Cup match against Mexico, which FIFA had considered in the days before the game. Sir Keir Starmer directed officials to argue, with the support of the Football Association, that the match should remain scheduled at its original time.

Additionally, Yvette Cooper engaged with the British Ambassador to Mexico, urging British diplomats in the country to intervene against rescheduling the game. This was intended to help ensure that the 3,000 England fans who had traveled to support the team would not miss the match.

FIFA had planned to bring the kickoff forward by six hours due to a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms. Ultimately, FIFA decided to keep the originally scheduled start time; however, the actual kickoff was delayed by an hour because of the weather conditions on the day.

At a reception held at Downing Street, Sir Keir remarked, “We had to battle with the FA to get it back to where it was, which was counterintuitive.” The Football Association has so far chosen not to make any public comments on the matter
