British man held after woman's body found in suitcase in Colombia

A 46-year-old British national has been taken into custody in Ecuador following the discovery of a woman’s body inside a suitcase in Colombia. The suspect, Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith from Bournemouth, Dorset, is accused of causing the death of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba in a Bogota apartment on June 18, according to Colombian officials.

Authorities from the Attorney General’s Office in Colombia stated that Foster-Smith is believed to have fatally beaten Villalba. Following the alleged assault, he reportedly placed her body in a suitcase, attempting to hide the evidence, before fleeing the scene. Colombian prosecutors secured an arrest warrant for Foster-Smith, who was also the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.

Foster-Smith was apprehended at Quito International Airport in Ecuador. Local officials confirmed that the operation to locate him included assistance from Dorset Police. Bogota’s mayor, Carlos Fernando Galan, highlighted the collaborative efforts that led to his arrest.

Representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office commented, “We are supporting a British man who has been detained in Ecuador and are in touch with the local authorities.” Dorset Police have been contacted for additional statements regarding the case
