A new video game console aimed at encouraging children to be more active is preparing to launch in the UK and Ireland. Unlike traditional gaming devices that emphasize advanced graphics and powerful hardware, this product focuses on promoting physical movement. David Lee, CEO of the US technology company Nex, explains that their cube-shaped console, called the Nex Playground, is built to engage kids in active play rather than conventional controller-based gaming.
Scheduled for release on 22 June, the Nex Playground eliminates the use of handheld controllers by utilizing AI and an integrated camera to monitor players’ body movements. This approach places the console in the niche of motion-controlled gaming, which has been around since Nintendo introduced the Wii in 2006. Despite its relatively low profile, the device surprised the gaming market last year when research firm Circana reported it was the third best-selling console in the US during Black Friday 2025, outperforming models like the Xbox Series S and X. The concern over children’s passive screen time remains a pressing issue for many parents and policymakers, making this new device a timely alternative.
The Nex Playground will be available for £269 (€319) at launch, including five starter games free of charge. However, accessing most of the more than 60 available games requires a subscription. The service offers annual and quarterly options, costing £90 and £45 respectively. Parents who already own the console in the US shared mixed feelings about the subscription, with some initially hesitant about the ongoing cost.
