Passengers involved in the train collision near Bedford on Friday afternoon have shared harrowing accounts of the moments following the crash. The East of England Ambulance Service reported that nearly 90 individuals sustained injuries, with more than 30 suffering serious harm. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and injury as emergency responders arrived at the site.
One of the passengers, Teresa Itabor from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, was traveling on the 16:57 train heading to London to celebrate her birthday. Teresa recounted that she had her eyes closed and was wearing headphones when the accident occurred. She said, “We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang… I didn’t know what was going on; my head hit the seat in front of me.” Upon opening her eyes, she was confronted with “people on the floor with blood everywhere.” She also mentioned that the carriage doors had become jammed and did not open after the impact.
Dr. Peter Knapp, who was traveling in the front carriage of one of the trains, described the wreckage as resembling the aftermath of an explosion. He told the BBC, “When I got up, I saw all of the chairs everywhere. It felt like I’d been in a bomb explosion.” He added that bloodied passengers were scattered throughout the carriage and many had broken limbs, with smoke filling the area. Speaking from the roadside, he observed police taking details from passengers while others were assisted onto ambulances, noting that “some people are spitting out blood.”
Another witness, Brett Byatt, said he realized something was wrong because the train failed to slow as usual between Bedford and Luton. He explained, “Then it was like a boom, smash, and everyone that was sat down went flying into one another.” Brett further described the serious injuries he observed, including a woman with a snapped leg and another unable to move due to back injuries. He also recounted seeing a man lying on the floor unable to move his neck, who was being supported by fellow passengers. Similarly, Shola Mene described the impact as “like a big bang,” recalling how people were thrown from their seats amid the chaos. She said, “There was a lot of blood… A lot of people had facial injuries,” adding that someone was even propelled across the carriage and struck her husband in the face
