A former healthcare professional has received a caution from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after attempting to access and sell the medical records of Catherine, Princess of Wales. This incident prompted an investigation by the ICO, which began in March 2024 following reports that a staff member at the London Clinic tried to view the princess’s medical notes during her treatment for abdominal surgery earlier that year.
The London Clinic, a private hospital located near Regent’s Park in central London and known as the UK’s largest independent private hospital, confirmed its cooperation with the ICO during the investigation. A spokesperson for the hospital stated, “We are pleased our work with the ICO has brought this sad and isolated incident to a conclusion. There were no regulatory breaches by the hospital.” The ICO described their enforcement action—a caution—as both appropriate and proportionate under the circumstances.
Highlighting the seriousness of the breach, the ICO emphasized the “deliberate misuse of highly sensitive personal information and an offer to disclose it for financial gain.” However, their inquiry found no evidence pointing to broader systemic issues within the healthcare provision involved. Ian Hulme, the ICO’s executive director for regulatory supervision, underscored the importance of safeguarding personal information in healthcare, saying, “People should be able to trust that the personal information they’re giving to healthcare settings is safe and protected from exploitation. When this trust is broken, it’s right that the law allows us to take action.”
Earlier in 2024, Catherine underwent abdominal surgery at the London Clinic, after which she temporarily stepped back from public engagements to recover. By early 2025, the princess announced she was in remission from cancer and began gradually resuming her public duties. Recently, she was seen in good spirits, interacting warmly with other members of the royal family at the Order of the Garter service, an event she had missed the previous year during her cancer treatment
