Essex Police given new David Sullivan information

Essex Police confirmed that following the release of a joint investigation on Monday, they had initiated some contact and inquiries related to the case. The investigation detailed allegations from multiple women accusing David Sullivan of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour stretching back to the 1980s. Sullivan has strongly denied all accusations made against him.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy acted swiftly after the BBC disclosed that Sullivan was banned from engaging with the women’s and youth teams at West Ham due to safeguarding concerns. This restriction, which had been in place for three years, was imposed following a historic allegation raised with the Football Association (FA) in 2023. Despite these limits, Sullivan was still permitted to attend men’s first team matches and the ban was not made public.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sullivan disputed the allegations once again, claiming, “I have never met any academy or women’s team players ‘1-2-1’ during my 16 years at West Ham.” He added that the complaint “had nothing to do about my time in football and it never happened.” Regarding the restrictions placed on him, Sullivan said, “I saw it as a meaningless restriction, as it didn’t impact on my work in any way, therefore I accepted it for a quiet life,” and emphasized that it was incorrect to label this arrangement as a “disciplinary ‘ban’.”

Following these revelations, Lisa Nandy demanded a “full and urgent explanation” about how the serious allegations against Sullivan were managed. She held meetings with both West Ham and the FA to seek clarification on safeguarding procedures. West Ham has expressed confidence in its “robust safeguarding measures.” Meanwhile, Boyle Sports, one of West Ham’s primary sponsors, disclosed that it had not been informed about the restrictions on Sullivan. In a statement, Boyle Sports expressed its concern over the serious allegations and voiced support for the Independent Football Regulator’s urgent review. The investigation also uncovered that eight women, including a participant in the inquiry, have approached the police with disclosures about Sullivan’s conduct, though none of these cases have yet resulted in charges.

David Sullivan, aged 77, served as West Ham’s joint chairman for 16 years and was the club’s largest individual shareholder after his business partner David Gold passed away in January 2023. He resigned as joint chair the previous Saturday, stating he wished to concentrate on contesting what he called “factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life.” In his resignation announcement, Sullivan remarked that given his extensive career in the adult industry and interactions with thousands of women, it was “sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me.” Both West Ham and the FA maintain that they have clear and robust safeguarding measures in place but have declined to comment on specific cases
