The family of Panashe Muchenje, a 19-year-old man who tragically died after encountering trouble in a lake in Nottinghamshire, have remembered him as a caring and loving individual. Panashe was with friends when he entered Balderton Lake, located off Heron Way in New Balderton near Newark, on 28 May during the recent warm weather. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance at the scene and being transported to hospital, he sadly passed away, with Nottinghamshire Police confirming his death on 30 May.
Maxwell Muchenje, Panashe’s uncle, has asked people to refrain from sharing videos related to the incident or spreading speculation about the circumstances surrounding Panashe’s death. He described Panashe as an energetic and friendly person, deeply involved in his church community. “He was a very energetic person, very loving,” Maxwell said. “His church community loved him so much, he did a lot within the church and he was friendly. For us it was a tragic event.”
According to Nottinghamshire Police, no suspicious conditions were reported in connection with Panashe’s death, and a file will be submitted to the coroner. Maxwell explained that Panashe, who had relocated from Zimbabwe about three years ago, was pursuing studies at Nottingham College and was in the process of applying to join the Royal Air Force. He expressed how sharing videos online has caused further distress to the family, urging anyone circulating such content to remove it immediately: “I would ask that if someone [has] got these videos circulating, if they would kindly delete them and not share them.”
Maxwell further shared that Panashe had basic swimming skills and that one of his friends had attempted to assist him in the water. “The peers did not realise that their colleague was in distress and the nature of the lake and depth of water made it difficult for them to save him,” Maxwell said. He emphasized that the friends were not at fault and that the family is grateful for the support from the community, the police, hospitals, and especially the church. A burial service is planned to take place next week
