Three men from the UK have admitted involvement in the death of a restaurant owner in Canada following a dispute over an unpaid bill. Robert Evans Jr, aged 25, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of Sharif Rahman, who was 44 years old. The altercation took place in August 2023 in the town of Owen Sound, approximately 190 kilometers from Toronto.
Robert Evans Jr’s father, Robert Busby Evans, 49, and his uncle, Barry Evans, 56, have both pleaded guilty to being accessories in the case. Both have received sentences equivalent to time already served. The Evans family is believed to hail from Manchester and were extradited to Canada from Scotland last year. Sentencing for Robert Evans Jr is scheduled for the following month.
Local authorities reported that the two older Evans men have been handed over to the Canadian Border Agency for deportation. Sharif Rahman, a father of one, died about a week after a physical confrontation with the Evans family outside a curry restaurant. The disagreement arose from an unpaid bill amounting to $150 (roughly £79). Rahman was discovered lying in the street by a member of the restaurant staff and later passed away at a hospital in London, Ontario.
At the time of the incident, media in Canada stated that the Evans men were visiting on holiday visas and left the country shortly afterward. More than a year later, Robert Evans Jr and his father were arrested by Police Scotland in Edinburgh, while Barry Evans was apprehended in Dalkeith. All three men agreed to their extradition to Canada during hearings held last October at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. According to defense counsel Sarah Loosemore, Robert Busby Evans felt it was “appropriate for these matters to be dealt with under the Canadian justice system.”
