River Don search for missing boy, 11, under way at Mexborough

Emergency responders are currently engaged in a search for an 11-year-old boy who was last observed entering the River Don in Mexborough. Authorities were alerted at around 20:00 BST on Saturday when reports emerged that the child had gone into the water and had not come out.

A specialized operation that includes underwater search efforts is ongoing, with South Yorkshire Police providing support to the boy’s family during this difficult time. The police have asked the public to avoid the vicinity around Ferry Boat Lane to ensure rescue personnel can work without interference.

Insp Neil Pryce commented on the situation, noting that witness accounts and items found along the riverbank have helped narrow down the area where the boy might have entered the water. He emphasized the coordinated efforts underway, saying, “Utilising specialist knowledge and skills, a coordinated multi-agency operation is under way and we are doing everything we can to find this young man.”

Representatives from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their involvement in the initial search efforts on Saturday, though regrettably, they were unable to find the boy at that time. They stressed that search activities are still ongoing with several resources deployed at the scene, urging the public to keep clear while the operation continues
