Boy who drowned in Leadbeater Dam named as Reco Puttock

A tragic incident occurred at Leadbeater Dam on Lumb Lane in Halifax, West Yorkshire, when 13-year-old Reco David-James Puttock lost his life after drowning. Emergency services were called just before 3:20 pm on Monday, and although Reco was pulled from the water and rushed to hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead. Police confirmed that they are continuing to investigate the circumstances, with no suspicion of foul play.

Reco was remembered fondly by those who knew him. Lightlife Academy in Halifax, where he was a student, described him as a “popular and much-loved student who will be greatly missed by students, staff and our wider academy community.” The school expressed their deepest sympathies to his family and promised to provide support for students returning from half-term. Plans are also underway within the school community to hold a tribute in Reco’s honour.

Tributes also came from the local rugby league community. King Cross Park Rugby League Club, where Reco played for the under-13s team, conveyed their sorrow, stating there are no words to lessen the pain experienced by his family and friends. “Rest in peace young man,” they wrote, extending condolences to all affected. Similarly, Kippax Welfare Rugby League offered heartfelt sympathies in a social media post, noting that rivalries and team affiliations mean little in the face of such a heartbreaking loss.

In light of these events, Reco’s father, Carl, has issued a plea to raise awareness among families about the dangers of children playing near bodies of water, especially during hot weather. His message urges parents, friends, and relatives to ensure children understand the risks involved. This tragic loss comes amid other recent water-related fatalities involving teenagers in South Yorkshire and Warwickshire, underscoring the importance of water safety awareness
