Man charged over fatal shooting of award-winning young farmer Charles Kinston

A man has been formally charged in connection with the shooting death of a young farmer in Derbyshire that occurred over two years ago. Charles Kinston, aged 23, was discovered deceased in a field near Swadlincote on 29 January 2024, specifically off Brizlincote Lane in Bretby.

The individual charged is 37-year-old Joseph Simpkins, who also lives on Brizlincote Lane, Bretby. He faces multiple charges including manslaughter, possession of ammunition without a valid certificate, and possession of prohibited ammunition. Simpkins has been released on bail and is expected to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on 15 June, according to Derbyshire Police.

Charles Kinston was known for his inventive spirit in farming circles. Notably, he came third in the Farmers Weekly inventions competition in 2020 for modifying a Land Rover Discovery to serve as an off-road milk float for calf-feeding rounds. This innovation highlighted his practical approach to farm work and gained him recognition within the agricultural community.

In February 2024, the Leicestershire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs paid tribute to Kinston, describing him as a “kind and generous character.” The organisation expressed its devastation at his passing and extended its deepest condolences to his family. Having been a member of the Netherseal YFC for over twelve years, Kinston was remembered as someone who brought laughter to those around him and positively impacted many lives through his long association with the club. Police confirmed that officers were called to the scene at around 18:30 GMT on the day he was found, and Kinston was pronounced dead shortly thereafter
