Radio 1’s Big Weekend entered its third and final day with music fans continuing to fill Sunderland’s Herrington Country Park, creating an electric atmosphere. Over the course of the festival, nearly 100 artists have taken to the stages, drawing thousands of eager attendees to enjoy live performances, sunshine, and a vibrant festival experience.
The closing day’s lineup included notable performances from CMAT, Niall Horan, Myles Smith, and Ezra Collective. Olivia Dean was set to close the weekend with her first-ever UK festival headline set, starting at 20:45 BST. Her appearance marked the conclusion of one of the largest music events the city has seen in recent years. Earlier in the day, DJ Maia Beth from Washington kicked off the main stage with a lively set featuring upbeat tracks such as The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” Sporting a Newcastle football shirt, she received the loudest cheer of the morning when she played Sam Fender’s “That Sound.”
Among the festivalgoers was 23-year-old Kiera, who traveled from Darlington with a friend to enjoy the festivities on the final day. She expressed excitement for Olivia Dean and Jorja Smith, remarking, “We can’t wait for Olivia Dean and Jorja Smith – wish they did more events up in the North East.” Meanwhile, Sam Fender fans Sarah and Joe journeyed six hours by coach from Dudley in the West Midlands. Joe hoped that Sam Fender would join Olivia Dean on stage, while Sarah shared her enthusiasm: “We came yesterday loved Louis Tomlinson, I’ve seen him five times this year he was great yesterday. I’m also a big fan of Niall Horan so looking forward to seeing him too.”
Niall Horan admitted to feeling “nervous” about performing his first live show in nearly eighteen months but praised the supportive crowd, saying, “You’re a lovely, hospitable welcoming people. This is my kind of crowd.” Meanwhile, Myles Smith from Luton brought a lively US hoedown vibe to Sunderland with energetic tracks such as “Nice To Meet You” and “We Can Dance.” His engagement with the audience included running into the crowd during his song “Gold,” taking selfies and exchanging high fives. He humorously commented after the performance, “I need to go back to the gym, I’m so out of breath after that.” Throughout the weekend, attendees enjoyed a wide array of live acts and DJ sets across three stages, complemented by food and drink options. BBC Music correspondent Mark Savage noted that security staff at the main stage also distributed water to help festivalgoers stay hydrated in the heat
