East Belfast: Fire burning at recycling site

Firefighters continue to tackle a significant blaze at a metal recycling facility in east Belfast. The fire broke out at Clearway, located on East Twin Road within the Titanic Quarter, where thick black smoke and flames have been clearly visible since Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services, including police and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), have urged motorists to steer clear of the East Twin Road vicinity and advised residents to keep their doors and windows closed to minimize exposure to the smoke. A police cordon has been established at the Airport Road entry to the harbour estate, while Queen’s Road remains closed to both pedestrians and vehicles to allow for safe passage of emergency crews accessing the site.

The NIFRS described the fire as involving a large quantity of scrap metal measuring roughly 50 by 50 meters. To combat the blaze, nine pumping appliances, an aerial appliance, a high volume pump, and around 60 firefighters are actively engaged. The high volume pump is being used to direct water onto the flames. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and all onsite personnel are confirmed safe. The fire service has indicated that operations are expected to continue for an extended period.

Belfast Harbour Police emphasized their collaboration with local police, fire crews, and Clearway representatives as they manage the incident within the Harbour Estate. They also recommended that residents in the surrounding areas remain indoors with windows and doors shut as a precaution while advising people to avoid the affected zone altogether
