Ex-Makerfield Green Party candidate apologises over 'false flag' post

Chris Kennedy, who was recently selected as the Green Party’s candidate for the Makerfield by-election, has withdrawn from the race shortly after his appointment. The party stated that his decision to step down was due to “personal and family reasons.” However, reports later revealed that Kennedy had shared social media content alleging that an arson attack on ambulances operated by the Jewish charity Hatzola in Golders Green was a “false flag” operation.

The Green Party confirmed that Kennedy apologized for the posts after they were brought to his attention and that he had removed them from his social media accounts. A spokesperson emphasized that the views expressed in those posts do not represent the party in any way. One particular post, according to The Times, included an Instagram video referring to the arrests of two men linked to the Golders Green arson as an effort to “keep the false flag flying.” The term “false flag” refers to actions committed with the intent of blaming an opposing group.

Kennedy, a registered nurse and a children’s safeguarding expert, initially withdrew citing the need to prioritize his family care responsibilities. The upcoming by-election in the Greater Manchester constituency is scheduled for 18 June, following the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons. Simons stepped down to provide an opportunity for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the seat and potentially return to Parliament.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski had earlier praised Kennedy as a “fantastic candidate,” highlighting the election’s focus on issues such as affordable energy, housing, and creating a more sustainable economy.
