'I was trying to save a life,' man who intervened in Golders Green attack tells BBC

A witness who stepped in during a stabbing incident targeting a Jewish man in Golders Green has shared his experience with the BBC, describing his actions as an effort to save a life. Ashkan Asadian came to the aid of 76-year-old Moshe Shine when Shine was attacked at a bus stop on Wednesday morning. Concerned that Shine’s life was in immediate danger, Asadian attempted to wrestle the knife away from the assailant.

The attacker fled into a nearby greengrocer’s shop, where Asadian quickly used a shopping trolley to block the exit, buying time for the police to arrive. Shine, who sustained serious injuries from the assault, has since been discharged from the hospital. CCTV footage captured the moment before the attack, showing Shine standing at the bus stop adjusting his kippah, a traditional Jewish cap, before the assailant lunged at him.

Asadian, 61, explained that his intervention was a spontaneous decision after witnessing the stabbing firsthand. “I saw him stabbing the old man in the neck,” he told the BBC. He recalled fearing that Shine would be killed if the attacker caught him, which compelled him to act without hesitation. “I try to maybe [see if] I can save someone’s life,” Asadian said, emphasizing that he didn’t consider his own safety during the confrontation.

During the struggle, both men fell onto the road, with the knife still in the attacker’s hand, as Asadian tried to keep him occupied and attempted several times to disarm him. Although his hoodie was cut and marked with two spots of blood, Asadian was not injured. After Shine escaped, Asadian followed the attacker into the shop and warned the staff about the knife, eventually locking the door with a trolley to contain him. When the attacker calmly left the store, Asadian alerted arriving police officers to his direction and stayed with Shine until medical help arrived. The attacker, Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder in relation to this and another stabbing earlier the same day and is due to appear in court on 15 May
