The seaside town of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is renowned for attracting thousands of visitors every year. However, a persistent issue with poor mobile phone signal is causing frustration for both residents and tourists. Named the postcode with the worst mobile network quality in the UK for 2025 by Which?, Tenby’s connectivity problems have worsened following the removal of a local phone mast earlier this year, which has impacted users of providers O2, Vodafone, and Three.
Steven Roberts, a local taxi driver, described the town as a “signal dead zone,” highlighting how the lack of reliable reception is significantly affecting his business. He recounted how he often struggles to respond to bookings and process card payments due to the unreliable signal. “When you’re in the town you might put your phone in front of the door to keep it open because that’s all it’s good for,” Steven explained, emphasizing the daily challenges he faces. He noted that regular customers tend to understand the situation, but new clients may simply opt to go elsewhere when communication fails.
Businesses in Tenby are also feeling the strain. Guy Manning, who operates an art shop in the town, shared that the poor network has led to a decline in customers. “It’s difficult for me because people don’t always want to get cash. It can be difficult to take card payments because of the bad signal,” he said. Manning also highlighted the impact on tourists’ shopping habits, noting that many visitors hope to return later but sometimes do not, or inquire about online options as a sign they may not come back.
Visitors themselves have expressed mixed experiences regarding the signal issues. Paul Wiston, visiting from Cheshire, described it as a “struggle,” especially for someone self-employed, while others, like Lynne Cornish from the Rhondda Valley and Frankie Bennet from London, appreciated the break from constant connectivity. Despite this, major mobile providers have acknowledged the problem. O2, Vodafone, and Three have all issued apologies and assured that efforts are underway to find long-term solutions, including replacing the decommissioned mast and optimizing existing infrastructure to improve coverage in Tenby.
