Police probe link between Brixton drive-by shooting and stabbing

Police are examining whether there is a connection between two violent incidents in Brixton, south London—a drive-by shooting and a stabbing—that both left individuals severely injured. The shooting occurred just after 01:15 BST on Saturday along Coldharbour Lane, resulting in four people being admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds. Among the injured was a 25-year-old man whose condition is described as life-threatening. Roughly an hour later, officers responded to a stabbing incident approximately 700 metres away on Acre Lane, where a 33-year-old man sustained critical injuries.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that apart from the man in critical condition, three other victims from the shooting, aged 21, 47, and 70, suffered wounds that were not life-threatening. No arrests have been made yet in relation to either crime. Authorities are actively investigating the possibility that these attacks might be linked, with a view to identifying those responsible.

A family member of the 25-year-old shooting victim told the BBC that he was “just a civilian” and that he was not involved in any gang activity. The cousin, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “He’s on a machine in hospital. They got four civilians here, he is a good person and not involved in gangs or anything like that.” Witnesses described the shooting as involving a vehicle pulling up on the opposite side of the road and firing seven shots, with one witness recounting they saw a man shot in the head. Prior to the shooting, residents had gathered to enjoy a barbecue at the site outside Southwyck House on Coldharbour Lane, an area familiar for such community events.

Responding promptly, the London Ambulance Service treated four patients at the scene, transporting two to a major trauma centre and two others to a nearby hospital. By Sunday, forensic teams were seen meticulously combing through debris including bottles, bags, and rubbish at the shooting location. Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, described the shooting as “an act of indiscriminate violence” and assured the community that officers are working swiftly to identify those behind it. Meanwhile, the police have made an appeal for anyone with information related to either the shooting or stabbing to come forward.

Local residents expressed shock and concern following the incidents. Moh John, a supermarket worker near the scene, recounted how frightened people rushed into his shop after the shooting, leading him to keep the doors locked for safety. He told the Press Association, “It was busy, there was a party. I saw the people run away. But then I saw the people, some people try to come in the shop and I locked the door.” Another local, Robert, reflected on the unusual nature of the event in the area, stating, “I usually feel safe around here, people know each other and get on. There’s been a few stabbings, and one day one gun was caught, but I don’t think anyone’s ever been shot like this.” Police continue with detailed searches at the scene, with cordons remaining in place as they pursue witnesses and gather evidence
