A 19-year-old has been convicted of murder after fatally striking a woman with his vehicle outside a social club in Cardiff. Kian Bateman drove into Shelley Davies, 38, and her partner David Bratcher, 40, near the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau on September 27 last year. While both sustained serious injuries from the incident, Davies tragically passed away in hospital three weeks afterward.
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, it emerged that Bateman’s actions followed an altercation involving Bratcher and Bateman’s brother, Kai. Bateman’s aunt Louise was also hit by the car amid the chaos. As the verdict was announced, Bateman was heard shouting, “I didn’t see Shelley, I didn’t see her, I didn’t see her” while being led from the dock. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 3.
On the night of the incident, Davies and Bratcher had attended a music event featuring ragga artist and DJ General Levy at the club. Davies sustained multiple fractures—ribs, arm, pelvis, and hip—along with various wounds and abrasions. Following her injuries, she developed severe complications, including infections that led to septic shock, which ultimately proved fatal.
Bateman admitted to inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, earlier that evening but denied it caused any hostile or aggressive feelings. Though he acknowledged responsibility for Davies’s death, the case centered on whether he intentionally drove into her or aimed to cause serious harm. Bateman told police he felt threatened after claiming his car was surrounded and that he drove away fearing attack, unaware he had struck anyone until his cousin informed him the following day. However, the prosecution presented CCTV footage disputing the claim that the car was surrounded. The jury found Bateman guilty of Davies’s murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Bratcher but acquitted him of attempted murder against Bratcher. The court also heard that Bateman fled the scene at speed without stopping or seeking medical assistance, abandoning the vehicle afterward
