The 2026 London Marathon has set a new benchmark as the largest annual one-day fundraising event worldwide, organizers confirmed. This year’s marathon has generated an impressive £87.5 million for numerous charities, surpassing the previous record of £87.3 million established during the 2025 race. Officials anticipate the final fundraising amount to exceed £90 million once the total is finalized in September.
During the event held last Sunday in London, Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe made history by becoming the first person to officially complete a marathon in under two hours, finishing with a world record time of one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. On the women’s side, Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa shattered her own women-only world record, completing the race in two hours, 15 minutes, and 41 seconds. The race also achieved a Guinness World Record for the highest number of finishers in a marathon, with 59,830 participants completing the course.
Hugh Brasher, Chief Executive of London Marathon Events, described the day as “extraordinary,” emphasizing the remarkable performances by elite runners, the unprecedented participation figures, and the outstanding fundraising success. He expressed gratitude towards all those who contributed by raising funds or donating to a wide range of charities, highlighting the significance of surpassing the previous year’s fundraising record.
Looking ahead, the National Autistic Society has been named the official charity for the 2027 London Marathon. The organization expressed enthusiasm about being selected and aims to make the upcoming marathon “the most inclusive marathon yet.” Their “It’s Time To Show Up” campaign plans to engage the public in supporting autistic individuals through small but impactful changes.
