A young girl of ten years old made a remarkable discovery while on vacation in Wales when she found an endangered Mexican axolotl. She recounted to the BBC the experience of spotting and capturing the rare amphibian during her holiday. This event marks the very first recorded occasion of an axolotl being found in the wild within the United Kingdom. Experts estimate that globally, only between 50 and 1,000 of these creatures remain.
Evie, the girl, was wading in the shallow waters of the River Ogmore at Bridgend when she noticed the axolotl concealed among the rocks. Recognizing its rarity, her family promptly decided to cut short their holiday to bring the animal back with them to their home in Leicester. They named the amphibian Dippy, a nod to its place of discovery.
Reflecting on their new addition, Evie expressed, “I think it’s a really nice change to the family,” highlighting how much the animal has already impacted their household. Meanwhile, Chris Newman, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare (NCRW), commented on the situation, suggesting that Dippy’s presence in the river likely resulted from a previous owner releasing it because of a “change in circumstances.”
