Counter-terrorism officers have launched an investigation following the arrest of a former employee of Parliament under anti-hacking legislation. The individual, a 40-year-old man, was taken into custody last Thursday at his residence in Coventry, according to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit.
The arrest was made under the provisions of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, which is designed to safeguard data stored on computers from unauthorized access. Authorities revealed that the allegations are connected to the time during which the man worked within parliamentary premises. After being detained, the suspect was released on bail and is due to return in July.
At the beginning of Monday’s session in the House of Commons, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle addressed MPs briefly regarding the ongoing security issue. He emphasized that the police inquiry was continuing and noted, “As you know, we do not discuss the details of such issues on the floor of the House.” He added, “This is an ongoing criminal investigation. I do not intend to take any further point of order on this matter. I will update members when I’m in a position to share more information.”
A spokesperson for Parliament acknowledged the arrest but refrained from providing further details due to the active nature of the investigation. They affirmed, “The safety and security of everyone who works in or visits Parliament is our priority.”
