Prince William recently celebrated the festive season by joining the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards at their Christmas party, where he enjoyed a pint with the troops. As the regiment’s colonel, he took the opportunity to personally serve dessert to the junior ranks at Combermere Barracks in Windsor. This role was passed down to him two years ago when his father, King Charles, ascended to the throne.
Expressing his pride on social media, Prince William stated he was “proud to be colonel of regiment – and to serve pudding to them this year.” He also extended his gratitude, saying, “A huge thank you to the soldiers and families of the Welsh Guards for everything you do.” His ongoing relationship with the battalion goes back to 2003 when he spent his gap year with them in the jungles of Belize, Central America—a connection he has maintained ever since through regular visits.
In November last year, the Prince of Wales observed their live firing exercises on Salisbury Plain. During this visit, he toured the training grounds and was shown various weapons systems, including small drones. The battalion’s senior operator commented on the prince’s handling skills as “good,” noting that he “could be trained up,” suggesting that Prince William showed promise during the demonstration.
Earlier in 2023, Prince William and the Princess of Wales, who now holds the role of Colonel of the Irish Guards once held by her husband, participated in the Welsh Guards’ St David’s Day procession. Together, they presented handmade leeks to officers and soldiers, a symbolic tradition worn on their chests. The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards has played a significant role in several key ceremonial occasions, including the late Queen Elizabeth’s funeral and King Charles’s coronation in 2023. They have also been featured in numerous BBC documentaries, such as the BAFTA Cymru-winning film *Helmand: Tour of Duty*, released in 2024
