A lorry driver involved in a fatal crash on an industrial estate tried to blame the incident on a coughing fit, but his story fell apart when his dashcam footage revealed otherwise. Mariusz Korkosz, a driver for a Polish haulage company, was caught on camera driving incorrectly for almost 20 seconds before colliding head-on with another truck driven by Gary Rees, who tragically passed away as a result of the crash. Despite Korkosz’s claims of a coughing-induced blackout, the audio recording from his dashcam only captured him swearing moments before the impact.
The collision, which occurred at a combined speed of around 45mph, was described as massive by forensic collision investigator Dean Burnett from Gwent Police. Mr. Rees, a 55-year-old father of two and a well-respected figure in Caerphilly, was seriously injured in the crash and had to be extracted from his lorry. Despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries three weeks later, leaving behind a devastated family and community.
In the aftermath of the collision, Mr. Rees’s widow, Hayley Rees, shared how her husband had tried to avoid the collision by swerving and bracing himself for impact. The investigation revealed that Mr. Rees had taken evasive action, including activating his hazard lights and attempting to steer away from the oncoming lorry. In contrast, Korkosz persisted with his story of a coughing fit but eventually admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison.
Despite the tragedy and loss, Mr. Rees’s family honored his memory with a heartfelt funeral procession that brought the town of Caerphilly to a standstill. His sons, Macauley and Jorge, recalled how their father’s love for rugby and lorries was reflected in the arrangements, including having his coffin carried on the back of an American truck.
