In Leicester, the trial of Julia Wandelt and Karen Spragg, accused of stalking Madeleine McCann’s parents, took an emotional turn on Thursday. Wandelt, 24, tearfully defended herself in court, stating she had done nothing wrong. The Polish national also denied altering images sent to Madeleine’s sister, Amelie, in an attempt to make her look like the missing child.
The prosecution alleged that Wandelt and Spragg propagated the idea that Wandelt was Madeleine, leading to stalking behaviors such as sending emails, making phone calls, leaving voicemails, and appearing at the McCanns’ address. Despite receiving no replies from the McCann family, Wandelt insisted she believed they would want to follow up on any potential leads related to their missing daughter.
Throughout the trial, Wandelt displayed visible distress and frustration, repeatedly asserting her belief that she was indeed Madeleine. The court also heard about Wandelt’s attempts to contact Kate and Gerry McCann, including an incident where she knocked on their door seeking to provide Mrs. McCann with a DNA report.
Prosecutor Michael Duck KC raised questions about Wandelt’s communications and the altered images she sent, suggesting she sought to create a resemblance between herself and Madeleine. Wandelt maintained that she had not intentionally altered the images and expressed her exhaustion and desire to know her true identity. The trial will continue, with Mrs. Spragg not expected to testify
