A historic pub in north-west London that gave its name to a Tube station and the surrounding area has closed down, but campaigners are calling for it to be saved. Ye Olde Swiss Cottage called time after almost two centuries in business, leaving residents and patrons noting the real loss for the local community and for London. Samuel Smith’s Brewery, the operator of the pub, has not commented on its fate.
Ye Olde Swiss Cottage became a local landmark despite its design’s unclear reason in the style of a Swiss chalet, leading Swiss Cottage Tube station and the local community to take their names from it. While the pub’s building is not listed, nor is it an asset of community value, campaigners are hoping that it can be kept as a pub, emphasising its 200 years of rich tradition and unique design.
The issue of closing of pubs in the capital is an ongoing one, with more pubs shutting down in London than anywhere else in England over the past six months, according to the London Assembly pub audit. A campaigner said the closure of the Ye Olde Swiss Cottage pub is just one more example of this. Pubs are at the heart of every town and city in the UK and they are often the hub for the community, as well as the venue for birthdays, watching sports and commiserating with friends when needed.
