Tributes after death of Slimming World founder, 76

Margaret Miles-Bramwell, founder of the weight-loss network Slimming World, has passed away at the age of 76. Mrs Miles-Bramwell established the business with a single group in Alfreton, Derbyshire back in 1969. Today, the organization has more than 3,500 consultants and employing 400 people at its headquarters. Mrs Miles-Bramwell struggled with her weight as a child and established her first group to help people’s physical health but also their mental wellbeing, which could include “the sometimes far heavier burden of shame and self-criticism.”

“Margaret touched the hearts and changed the lives of millions of people, including all of Slimming World’s consultants and staff, who will feel her loss deeply,” a statement from Slimming World read. Mrs Miles-Bramwell remained chairwoman until her death, and the company said it held those founding principles necessary to its strategy. The managing director also mentioned that she was “a loving and much-loved” mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs Miles-Bramwell’s legacy was rooted in her generosity, passion, and humor, and it is important to “continue to keep her legacy alive by doing the very same thing,” according to Lisa Salmon, managing director of Slimming World. The “fierce belief in doing the right thing” was essential to her approach in business, and the company’s job is to honor this with their continued efforts.

The company announced that Margaret Miles-Bramwell left the world a healthier place in a statement. Slimming World exuded its heartfelt sympathy for her family, who lost Tony in 2021, and hope that Margaret has now reunited with him. Mrs Miles-Bramwell’s contribution to the health of the British public was recognized with an OBE in 2009
