The University of Essex is mourning the loss of four students who died in a car crash early on Saturday morning. Makyle Bayley, 22, Eva Darold-Tchikaya, 21, Anthony Hibbert, 24, and Daljang Wol, 22, all died at the scene. They had been travelling in a black Ford Focus which collided with a building on Magdalen Street in Colchester at around 04:40 GMT. Essex Police said they did not believe there were any other vehicles involved and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Mr Hibbert and Mr Wol were both “outstanding members” of the Essex Rebels men’s basketball team. Mr Bayley was a talented basketball player who represented the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) team. Ms Darold-Tchikaya was an active member of the Essex Blades Dance Club and other clubs and societies.
Vice-Chancellor at the university, Professor Maria Fasli, paid tribute to the students. “These were young lives filled with hope, promise, talent, and dreams for the future,” she said. “They all played an active role in our community through clubs and societies and were well-known around the University.”
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing and Magdalen Street was closed throughout Saturday. Essex Police have extended their condolences to the families of the victims and are being supported by specialist officers. “Our specialist Serious Collision Investigation Unit is investigating what led up to the collision but at this stage we do not believe any other vehicles were involved,” said Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper
