Denis Law: Man Utd pay emotional tribute to legend before Brighton game

Manchester United have paid their respects to the late Denis Law, former striker for the club who passed away at the age of 84 on Friday. Law scored a total of 237 goals in 404 appearances for United, leading the team to numerous trophy wins between 1962 and 1973. The piper played Flower of Scotland and a poem was read out in a moment of silence before the game began.

Among the attendees were esteemed football legends, such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Pat Crerand, Alex Stepney, and Brian Kidd. He was a member of the United team that became the first club from England to win the European Cup in 1968, although he was unfortunately unable to take part in the final due to an injury. Law also won one FA Cup and two English league titles with United as well as helping Scotland win the British Home Championship six times.

In an interview with MUTV, Ferguson said, “He was the best Scottish player of all time…When he joined us in 1963 he turned the club around. That’s the greatest thing he could ever have done. The part he played at that time was so vital to the renovation of the team. I think most people always remember that signing from Italy. It was a cornerstone of their future success.” Law had two spells with Manchester City, who also wore black armbands in their later game against Ipswich in tribute to the football great
