To mark her 60th birthday, a new portrait of the Duchess of Edinburgh has been released. The photograph, taken earlier this month by fashion photographer Christina Ebenezer, features Sophie sitting on a cushioned bench in a bay window, wearing a black turtleneck and pleated cream midi skirt. Buckingham Palace has stated that Sophie chose Ebenezer due to her interesting style of photography and in a bid to support a rising female photographer.
The birthday milestone will be celebrated with her husband Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh. The couple will keep things low-key this year and mark the occasion by spending time at home together. Sophie’s public profile has grown in recent years, in part due to her dependable work ethic in a reduced monarchy following the departures of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and other members of the family.
Sophie has been actively working towards creating gender equality. As she turns 60, she renews her commitment to that work as her status in the public eye grows more prominent. She recently travelled to Kyiv, where she met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska, discussing how to support survivors in conflict-related issues such as sexual violence.
Ebenezer, who was born in Lagos, Nigeria, but moved to London at the age of four, is a rising star in the world of fashion photography. She has been recognised as a Forbes 30 Under 30 arts and culture leader and as a British Fashion Council New Wave Creative. Last year, two of her portraits, one of Michaela Coel and the other of Letitia Wright, were unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery. The Palace believes that the issue of gender equality is incredibly important, and they have stated that Sophie is looking forward to championing it further in the future
