London Stansted airport records 'busiest day in history'

Stansted Airport in London saw its busiest day in history on 27 October, with over 107,000 people passing through the terminal, beating the previous record set in August. The airport is estimated to have serviced more than 2.6 million passengers throughout October, helped by holiday destinations such as Spain, Turkey and the Canaries. Demand for family holidays and short breaks were major factors contributing to this record-breaking month for Stansted Airport.

While the high number of people passing through the airport might have caused queues and stress at security check, this was not the case with 99% of passengers getting through in just 15 minutes, with an average queue time of two minutes during peak hours. This shows a remarkable efficiency of the airport staff and facilities when dealing with such a high influx of travellers. “This is an incredible achievement,” said Gareth Powell, the airport’s managing director, who announced its investment programme to secure “links to even more global destinations”.

This record comes on the back of the announcement that Stansted airport is to receive £1.1bn to support its expansion, an indication of its rising importance to London’s transport infrastructure. Another recipient of this recent funding is the owner of P&O Ferries who have pledged to making London Gateway “Britain’s largest container port” through their £1bn investment plan. With the backing of the government and significant investment, the airport is now in a prominent position within the UK market, both as a travel destination and transport hub with expanding global reach.

This high demand demonstrates how vital the airport is for facilitating travel and the economy to and from London. These expansion plans will put the airport at the forefront of innovation in air transport and cement the fact that Stansted Airport is indeed a formidable player within the aviation industry in the UK. Stansted has become one of the leading airports in the United Kingdom and continues to expand, further boosting the local economy and bringing in greater numbers of international visitors
