BBC Children’s and Education has revealed that Balamory will make a return to screens more than two decades after the last episode aired. The popular pre-school TV show was set in the fictional Scottish town of Balamory but has not been in production for over 20 years. The show, centred around a nursery school and its teacher Miss Hoolie, aired its last episode in 2005. Two new seasons of the programme will be commissioned and are expected to feature some of the original characters.
BBC Children’s and Education said that the new programmes would be filmed in Scotland, with Tobermory or Rothesay on the Isle of Bute being considered as potential locations. The exact details of the shows are still being developed and the team is interested in production ideas for the two seasons, which will each have ten 14-minute episodes. Kate Morton, head of commissioning 0-6, said the viewing will be a treat for parents who grew up with the show, adding, “It will be a real treat for parents who grew up with the show to now introduce their little ones to the brightly coloured world, getting to know a host of old and new characters together.”
Julie Wilson Nimmo, who played Miss Hoolie, expressed excitement about the show making a comeback. She stated: “I seriously think this is bigger than the Oasis reunion.” The show enjoyed worldwide popularity, as it followed the everyday life of Miss Hoolie’s nursery and the town of Balamory. PC Plum, played by Andrew Agnew, was another prominent character associated with the show and could feature in the reboot; he had already expressed an interest in working on a new series.
The show reached a widespread audience across the globe, which resulted in licensing and merchandising efforts. Now fans eagerly await the opportunity to see their favourite characters return to screens once again.
