Police to “make decisions” about Taylor Swift’s London shows following Vienna terror threat

UK police are currently assessing the security of Taylor Swift’s upcoming performances at Wembley Stadium, following a thwarted terror threat targeting her shows in Vienna. The pop star is set to perform at the London stadium in the coming weeks. After playing three sold-out shows at the venue earlier this year, she will return for five more performances, supported by musicians including Paramore and Holly Humberstone. However, three of Swift’s shows in the Austrian capital were cancelled after two suspects were arrested, with one allegedly planning an attack at the event.

The 19-year-old main suspect was arrested in Ternitz, south of Vienna, and the second person in the Austrian capital. Austrian authorities indicated that the suspect was associated with the Islamic State group. Two other suspects have since been detained, and chemical substances and technical devices were reportedly found during a raid on the home of one of the suspects. The Kurier newspaper in Austria has suggested that the teenager stole the chemicals and planned to detonate a bomb or drive a car into the audience outside the stadium.

Police in the UK have been assessing the security of the Wembley shows in the wake of the foiled plot, with UK Home Office Minister Dame Diana Johnson asserting that they are yet to reach a decision. Swift has not yet commented directly on the situation, nor has she made a statement concerning her forthcoming London concerts.

The plot targeting Swift’s Viennese concerts is therefore one of a number of recent examples of the music industry being targeted by extremists. However, it appears that the security forces in both Austria and the UK have been successful in thwarting such plots
