The return of HBO’s hit series, Big Little Lies, has been discussed by actress Nicole Kidman. Kidman confirmed in November 2021 that fans of the show would see a third season, much to the surprise of viewers. The show, which was originally a mini-series, was so successful that HBO commissioned more episodes. Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies is an adaptation that explores the lives of wealthy parents in California’s Monterey area.

During a recent interview on Vanity Fair, Kidman and co-star Reece Witherspoon hinted at what audiences could see in the forthcoming season. The actress admitted that she “had already said too much” about the upcoming season, while Witherspoon attempted to divert the conversation. Kidman revealed that author Liane Moriarty is delivering the book, and the production team is “moving fast and furious.” She also admitted her error in spilling the beans, saying, “We need to shut up. There’s a whole thing about how you should never talk about something until you’ve done it because if you talk about doing it then it’s the dopamine hit of doing it and you feel like you’ve done it. It’s a scientific study.”

The possibility of a third season was previously quashed by actress Zoë Kravitz, who played Bonnie Carlson in the show’s second season. In an interview with GQ, Kravitz stated that she couldn’t imagine the show without director Jean-Marc Vallée, who passed away last year from “a fatal cardiac arrhythmia secondary to severe coronary atherosclerosis,” according to the final coroner’s report (via Deadline). Vallée was an executive producer and director on Big Little Lies and was integral to the show’s success. Winning eight Primetime Emmy Awards from sixteen total nominations, the show was named Outstanding Limited Series and also received a directing award.

HBO’s Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys, previously acknowledged the possibility of a third season in 2019. Despite noting that there was “no obvious place to go,” Bloys said he was “open” to hearing ideas from the show’s actors and producers. It appears that the excellent response from previous seasons has convinced the team to create season three, much to the anticipation of their fans
