London’s Arcola Theatre will be hosting a groundbreaking UK garage musical next month called “Bangers”, featuring a live DJ in a blend of theatre and gig. The show is written by Danusia Samal and directed by Chris Sonnex. Its premiere took place last year at Edinburgh Fringe, and it was also shown at the Soho Theatre over 2023. The show now debuts again with an all-new cast, exploring themes of love, sex and the power of music in a love letter to UK garage.
The show features two headliners crossing between stories of love, sex and the power of music on one night of intersection in their lives. A live DJ and narrator set the scene and soundtrack to the protagonists’ struggles with the past, as they move towards the future. The music they use is a combination of early 2000s and modern R&B and UKG.
Bangers is more than just a show; SH Productions, the show’s producers, also announced a “community-driven wrap-around activity” in collaboration with Cardboard Citizens, Cardboard Collective and Arcola. The initiative seeks to nurture creativity among young people with interests in theatre and music. Along with addressing the show’s themes, the initiative also seeks to help those dealing with issues such as housing insecurity, homelessness, and the challenges of growing up in urban areas.
Bangers runs from July 17 to August 10, with a daily start time of 7.30 PM at Dalston’s Arcola Theatre and has a runtime of 70 minutes. Tickets can be purchased here
