Today, leaders in Scotland are putting a pause on their general election campaigns to remember the sacrifices made during the D-Day landings. While members of parliament are traditionally focused on domestic issues, this day serves as an important reminder of international cooperation and the protection of democracy.
The King and Queen, along with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, will pay tribute to fallen soldiers at the UK’s national commemoration event at the British Normandy Memorial. They will be joined by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Commemorative services are also being held across Scotland.
For Deputy First Minister John Swinney, the day has particular significance as his uncle was awarded the Victoria Cross in WWII. Royal Marine Commando Tom Hunter was serving in Italy when he was killed, with his VC awarded posthumously. Swinney’s visit to France will mean he’s not available for First Minister’s Questions in the Scottish Parliament
