Jurors at London’s Southwark Crown Court have been told that several women involved in the case against Russell Brand have been deeply affected for years by the alleged sexual offences committed against them. Prosecutor Reil Karmy-Jones KC emphasized in her closing argument that these women had no ulterior motives for coming forward and were instead seeking a measure of closure.
The prosecutor outlined that six women, who do not know each other, had each provided testimony describing their experiences. She noted that although the complainants have moved forward in their lives, the trial has compelled them to revisit painful memories. Karmy-Jones highlighted that the women had not sought publicity or personal gain, stating, “There was no benefit to them from perhaps some closure.” Describing Brand’s behavior according to the allegations, the prosecutor said his demeanor shifted dramatically from “charming to frightening to nasty,” with complainants reporting that he ignored their refusals and persisted until his objectives were achieved.
Addressing suggestions that a documentary influenced the women’s accounts, Karmy-Jones rejected the idea that the allegations were fabricated or altered due to external factors. She said, “There is no magic force in this documentary… These women have realised they are not alone and have bravely come before you to tell the truth.” She further reminded the jury of the seriousness of the claims, noting the defendant’s inconsistent memory compared to the detailed recollections he now presents.
On the defence side, Polly Dyer acknowledged Brand’s 1995 guilty plea for cannabis possession but stressed that he had no other convictions, cautions, or warnings on record. During the trial, Brand’s wife Laura described him as a “kind and wonderful father.” Karmy-Jones acknowledged Laura’s testimony as courageous but pointed out that she was not present during the times of the alleged offences, with limited contact during those periods. The case against Brand, who faces seven charges including three counts of rape and three of sexual assault, continues as he denies all accusations
