A new initiative is about to commence focused on revitalizing long-term vacant homes in several Liverpool neighborhoods, including Anfield, Edge Hill, Everton North, and Princes Park, within the coming year. Liverpool City Council has partnered with Duke Developments, a local company based in south Liverpool, to restore 52 properties that have remained unused for many years. This effort aims to both increase the availability of housing and enhance the quality of these communities.
The refurbishment project will initially focus on houses in Anfield, progressing into Edge Hill in subsequent months as part of a broader city-wide strategy to bring empty homes back into use. Many of these properties have been unoccupied for over two decades, requiring extensive repairs. Approximately 20% of them suffer from severe structural issues, making such refurbishment imperative before they can be safely reoccupied.
Under the scheme, all targeted homes will undergo comprehensive renovation to create high-quality living spaces for local residents, supporting the wider regeneration ambitions in these areas. Some of the upgraded houses will be made available through Property Pool Plus, allowing people registered on Liverpool’s housing list to apply for them through the usual allocation system. This will ensure that homes long left vacant are transformed into secure accommodation for those in housing need, thereby reducing waiting times and reutilizing neglected properties.
This initiative forms a key part of the Council’s larger plan to address housing shortages while cutting down on long-term empty properties. Upon completion, the revitalized homes will offer a variety of housing options to support those currently on waiting lists. Nearby residents have been informed directly about the schedule for the refurbishment work, and efforts will be made to keep any disruption to a minimum. The programme has received positive remarks from local officials and involved partners alike, emphasizing its role in enhancing living conditions and strengthening local communities
