Russell Brand asked assistant for female fan phone numbers, court hears

A former personal assistant to Russell Brand has revealed in court that, shortly after starting her role, she was asked to collect phone numbers from female fans on the entertainer’s behalf. Helen Berger, who worked closely with Brand between June 2006 and February 2007, described feeling uneasy about the request. After seeking guidance, she informed Brand that she would no longer comply with this instruction.

Brand, aged 51, faces serious allegations including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of indecent assault. These accusations come from six women and cover incidents occurring over a decade, from 1999 to 2009. Brand denies all charges against him.

Berger provided a written statement to Southwark Crown Court, describing Brand’s sexual behavior as driven by an “insane sexual appetite.” She said she eventually left her position because she had grown “sick of him.” During her time as his assistant, Brand was frequently sexually active with multiple women. Berger also depicted a workplace atmosphere where Brand would express frustration over work tasks by asking if he could “go and have sex now.” While she never witnessed illegal conduct, she noted that Brand’s behavior was often normalized and dismissed by those around him, making it seem accepted.

She recounted Brand using platforms like MySpace to find women for sexual encounters and described his home as a place where “women often came over” clearly for sex. On one occasion, Berger remembered discovering a female celebrity asleep in Brand’s bed while he walked around the house half-dressed. She characterized Brand as a “peacock” who was regularly approached by women. In response, Brand’s legal team argues that any sexual encounters were consensual and contends that accounts have been distorted following a 2023 television documentary that alleged sexual abuse by the comedian. The prosecution is scheduled to conclude its case by Tuesday morning
