Letter making claims about Meghan’s father written by his ex-wife, BBC understands

According to information gathered by the BBC, a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police in 2019, containing numerous allegations concerning the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle, was authored by his former wife, Roslyn Loveless. Meghan Markle confirmed on Friday that she had previously been made aware of “disturbing allegations” about her estranged father. The Metropolitan Police acknowledged on Saturday that they had received this letter two years ago and that the contents were shared with both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at that time.

Reports have surfaced claiming that images related to child sexual abuse, allegedly connected to Markle, 82, were discovered at his former residence in the Philippines. Markle, who currently lives in the United States, has categorically denied all such accusations. Roslyn Loveless, now deceased, was married to Markle before he married Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, in 1979. Loveless is also the mother of Meghan’s half-siblings, Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr. Meghan, born in 1981, is the only child from Markle’s marriage to Ragland.

In a statement made public on Friday, Meghan addressed the letter’s existence and expressed her distress over the situation, stating, “I am deeply distressed… my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.” She also explained that this background provides context as to why she has largely severed contact with her father and has refused to allow him any interaction with her own children. Meghan has been estranged from Thomas Markle since 2018, with sources revealing that she broke off communication last year, informing him that both she and the authorities were aware of his alleged abuse of young girls. One source close to Meghan shared that she sent Markle a letter from the hospital in the Philippines—where he was recovering after a leg amputation—telling him he would never meet his grandchildren.

On Friday, Meghan’s half-brother disclosed to The Sun newspaper that he had found a collection of images belonging to their father at the latter’s former home in the Philippines. He reportedly informed the police that among these items were videos and pictures depicting child abuse. He also issued an apology to Meghan for previously supporting their father during their estranged relationship and admitted that he had “been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years.” It is reported that he reached out to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in July regarding these images, and the FBI has since confirmed its awareness of the matter. Meanwhile, officials in the Philippines have also confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations concerning Markle. The country’s anti-human trafficking and child sexual exploitation task force has taken up the case, as they informed the BBC.

Thomas Markle gave an interview to the Mail on Sunday in which he admitted to paying for sex during visits to the Philippines in the past but strongly denied ever engaging in sexual activity with underage girls or possessing any child abuse material. The Metropolitan Police stated that it did not share the details of the letter given to the Sussexes with any other law enforcement agencies and that it is currently reviewing how it handled the case. Markle relocated to the Philippines last year after suffering a series of strokes and is now reportedly residing in a rehabilitation center in Florida, where he is learning to walk again following the amputation of his leg
