The Home Secretary has called for an immediate investigation following the arrival of two migrant vessels on the beaches of Kent without interception at sea. Shabana Mahmood instructed Border Security Command to conduct a thorough review after these boats reached the shore—one landing at Samphire Hoe, located between Dover and Folkestone on Tuesday, and another near Folkestone on Monday.
On Tuesday, authorities detained twenty-one individuals following the arrival at Samphire Hoe. Additionally, five migrants were apprehended on Monday after an unmonitored landing close to Folkestone, marking the first such incident in a year. The Home Office has not confirmed if further searches for other migrants are underway.
Typically, migrants crossing the English Channel are escorted to the shore by Border Security Command or Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) vessels. However, before the Monday incident, no unofficial landings of small boats had been documented since September 6, 2025.
Such uncontrolled migrant landings are exceptionally uncommon in the UK. The event last week, along with the 2025 case, represent the only recorded occurrences since the Home Office began tracking this data in 2023
