A man convicted of murder who had been unlawfully absent for more than a week has been captured in the Republic of Ireland. Gary Anderson, aged 29, received a life sentence in 2023 alongside his brother for the killing of Karol Kelly in Londonderry.
Anderson was granted temporary release from prison to attend his father’s funeral but did not return as required. Authorities apprehended him on Wednesday at a residence in Buncrana, County Donegal. The town is located roughly a 30-minute drive from the Irish border and is a frequently visited area by people from the northwest of Northern Ireland.
Karol Kelly’s sister expressed her family’s disappointment with the justice system, saying they felt “let down.” The Justice Minister, Naomi Long, is scheduled to meet with the family later this week to discuss the situation.
Detective Inspector Gareth Lavery of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) extended his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the investigation following a public appeal. He praised An Garda Síochána officers for their help in arresting Anderson and confirmed that PSNI is cooperating with appropriate authorities to return him to custody. Meanwhile, An Garda Síochána stated the arrest of a man in his 20s was part of a planned operation, and the individual is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the North Western Region
